Preparation and application:

 Asphalt pavement is only as strong as the base it is paved on. It is imperative to the life of your asphalt investment to have the correct depth of compacted stone/base under your pavement. Sure Shot Sealing & Striping will insure that the stone base is graded and compacted correctly to the proper depth. Pellets will be spread on the stone to eliminate the possibility of grass growing in the future. The asphalt will then be laid at temperatures exceeding 200 degrees and compacted to the desired depth at the proper temperature.

Paving a road, driveway or parking area is an art that takes proper education and training. If any of the steps of paving are overlooked or poorly executed, your asphalt will not last as it is designed to.  Some of the damage you can expect from poor paving practices will be in the form of grass growing in your asphalt, alligator cracking, potholes, rocks “bleeding” off of the asphalt, water holes and other pavement flaws. Unfortunately it can take months or years for the damage caused by improper paving techniques to be recognized, giving the contractor plenty of time to get paid for a poor quality job.

As soon as freshly laid hot asphalt pavement mix begins to cool, the aging process begins.

When oxygen in the air and water combine with asphaltic binder of the pavement, a chemical change takes place. At first, this process is necessary for the pavement to become hard and firm. Later, if this process is not arrested, deterioration of the asphaltic binder will begin and your valuable asphalt investment will begin to pre-maturely age rapidly.

Enemies of a parking lot include: gas, oil, sun oxidation, salt, water penetration, and extreme hot or cold weather.

Effective crack sealing keeps water from entering and weakening the base or sub-base. If water penetrates the surface through unsealed cracks and the temperature drops below 32 degrees, the water will freeze and expand causing costly damage to your asphalt.

Potholes occur when water seeps into pavement through unsealed or improperly sealed cracks. When the water freezes, it expands and enlarges the crack. When the ice under the pavement melts, a void is left. Surrounding pavement falls into the void and forms a pothole.

As asphalt pavement progresses through its performance life cycle, its appearance diminishes over time.  Fine hairline cracks spread and deepen within the asphalt. These areas will spread like a cancer without ongoing maintenance.  Water may enter through cracks and holes may form, undermining the substrate.  In this case, the most effective form of repair is to remove and replace the deteriorated area.

Preparing Asphalt Area Around Drain for Patching

Patching Procedure:

Sure Shot Sealing & Striping will saw cut all patches using a walk behind or hand held asphalt cutting saw. The old asphalt will be removed and hauled off to an off site location. The base will then be inspected and replaced with a compactable base ideal for asphalt if needed. The edges of the existing asphalt will be cleaned and tacked with state approved asphalt tack. The asphalt will be replaced with state approved binder or surface mix asphalt and compacted to the proper depth. All completed patches will be smooth with clean straight edges that are appealing to the eye.

Sealcoats consist of a mixture of emulsified asphalt, coal-tar, sand, water, latex rubber additives and various other admixtures. Sealcoats are applied directly to the surface of asphalt pavement with such equipment as a rubber squeegee, broom, or mechanical spray machine.

 Sealcoats serve to seal the top of the asphalt, preventing water from penetrating the surface of the pavement and protecting the top layer of asphalt from oxidation and wear caused by exposure to the sun and air.  Sealcoats also beautify the pavement by providing a smooth, black, even surface ideal for painting lines and sweeping.

Sealcoats are designed for off highway use where there are low traffic speeds and tight turning radiuses such as parking lots, mobile home parks, schools, shoulders, etc.
